Introduction to Wiper Farming

Wiper is another name for striped bass hybrids. The parent fish are the striped bass, which is a fish that has evolved in salt water, and the white bass, which has evolved in fresh water. These fish have been around for several decades and have been gaining popularity as a food fish and as a sport fish. As a food fish the wiper is often seen in markets on the east coast as a substitute for striped bass. The striped bass fishery crashed in the ‘70’s due to excess commercial fishing and various environmental factors. A substitute fish was needed and the wiper has been very successful at filling that niche. It has also been found that the wiper is a superior game fish, with spectacular fighting qualities. This fish readily takes a lure and is renowned for its exceptional strength and endurance. Aquaculturists love this fish because of its rapid growth characteristics and resistance to disease. The wiper tolerates a wide range of water temperatures and can tolerate lower levels of dissolved oxygen than many other fish. An aquaculturist who has an available food fish market or is willing to develop a sport fishing market in his region can potentially make a profit. It is, however, important for any person considering such an endeavor to fully evaluate their own situation to determine if the wiper is the right fish for them.
